30 Minutes for Mama

When I had my first child eight years ago, I abruptly discovered that I would have to change my beauty routine in a hurry.  Having once cared about my appearance, I soon learned that time was no longer my own; more specifically, I had a three hour window to the actual minute to return to my daughter for a feeding, before a little fussing turned to inconsolable wailing.  Clearly, I no longer had the luxury of a three hour hair appointment or shopping trip, not including the additional hour of travel time.  Showers became optional.  Blow-drying and make-up were deemed unnecessary and soon became distant memories.

This three hour window ruled my life not once but twice, as I had child number #2  three years later.  While perfect hair or clothes is clearly no longer a priority for many moms, pampering ourselves, even if it is just a little bit every day, should remain on our to-do lists somewhere.  The truth is, when we feel better, we can care for our families better.  Luckily, you don’t need three hours to pamper yourself.  Even 30 minutes to yourself can help re-charge your energy and mood….

Massage Away Stress
Ask your partner for a back-rub, using some all-natural massage oil.  Massage can help you relax and unwind from the day and can even help you sleep better.

Bath Time
A half-hour bath with some added drops of essential oils or bubble bath can lift your spirits and relax you before bed.  Don’t forget to bring a good book and a cup of herbal tea.

Use Natural Products That Pamper
Using all-natural body lotions and soaps, especially those containing essential oils, can make you feel (and smell) good.  There are some wonderful all-natural skin and beauty products out there that are safer for our bodies and our planet.  Look for products that are free of artificial fragrances, animal products and petroleum-based ingredients.  Choose brands that list plant extracts and essential oils on their ingredient list, which are healthier for the skin and the environment.  Also, look for labels that state that the product is phthalate and paraben-free (two chemicals that have been linked to potential health issues in men, women and children).

What are some ways you pamper yourself, even if it is only once in a while?

Relax and Breathe!
